What Motivates You?

You are the manager of a key department in a large corporation. You have surveyed your employees to learn more about what they value and what is important to them in the workplace. Below are two employees who have presented you with a list of their workplace priorities. Items are listed in order, with the benefits at the top of the list being more important, and the benefits further down on the list being less important.

Initial Post Requirements

1. Using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, determine the level where each employee would be operating and explain why you chose that level for that employee. What influenced your decision?

2. Use your imagination to determine two ways that you might motivate each employee based on where you placed them on Maslow’s Hierarchy. (Please do not just use increasing wages/salaries or giving them benefits because most workplaces have stringent controls on those two areas, and a manager usually could not just arbitrarily offer those as motivators.) Be creative. Explain why you feel your motivators would be effective for each employee.

3. Finally, rank these items in order of importance for yourself. Which benefits are most important to you? Which are less important? Include your list in your initial discussion post.
