Why do wrongful convictions occur and how prevalent are they?

  • Wrongful convictions occur when innocent people are found guilty by a criminal court. Some innocent people agree to plead guilty in order to receive lighter sentences out of fear they may receive the death penalty. Wrongful convictions occur on a daily basis; as a result there has been an increase in the number of innocent projects to have wrongful convictions overturned. DNA testing has been a great asset for excluding innocent individuals, with the first DNA exoneration in the United States taking place in 1989 (Zalman, 2009).
  1. Identify and discuss any one type of cybercrime.
  • One type of cybercrime discussed in the article was digital piracy, defined as the illegal act of copying digital goods, software, digital documents, audio and video for any reason without explicit permission from and compensation to the copyright holder (Higgins & Wolfe, 2009). The music industry lost 4.5 billion and the movie industry lost 2.3 billion in 2004 (MPAA, 2004). While I know this is a major problem in the U.S., I am not surprised at the numbers. I was also able to see digital piracy on a larger scale while living overseas. In East Africa, there are store fronts that only sell burned movies and music. Moreover, the DVD’s and CD’s are sold for the equivalent of 50 cents. At this price, the stores are able to make enough money to run a successful business. In my hometown, individuals would set up stands on the corner to sell burned CD’s and DVD’s but as they became more aware of the consequences of digital piracy those individuals have decided to close up shop and sell clothing instead.
  1. Identify and discuss any one issue that you found interesting in Chapter 62: Terrorism.
  • When the topic of terrorism is brought up in discussion, I find that most people do not know that terrorist activity can include drug trafficking and money laundering. These criminal activities are used to set up more violent activities. Another article I read on the topic of how terrorism is funded, I found that poppy and the coca were responsible for funding September 11; these two plants are more valuable than diamonds, emeralds, platinum, and gold combined. Illegal drugs are cheap to make but they return enormous amounts of money and terrorist are aware of this (Ehrenfeld, 2002).
