White collar crime is a non-violent criminal activity that is usually done for financial gain, or personal gains like property, services, and business advantages.(FBI 2016) Typically when we look at white collar crime we think of money laundering, fraud, forgery, and identity theft.Today a big way for people to commit a white collar crime is through cyber frauds, phishing, and insurance frauds. White collar crimes are affecting about 36% of businesses and about 25% of households, compared to 8% traditional property and 1.1% of violent crimes according to a 2010 study. (Cliff & Wall-Parker 2018) My great grandmother was a victim of insurance fraud. She received a letter in the mail that looked like a application for a new insurance company. She filled it out, not knowing if was a fake and they ended up stealing her identity and had her paying for fake health insurance. She was 96 years old and wanted to save money and a fake company took advantage of her. I feel like this stuff happens all too often, people aren’t educated enough on spam mail and phishing scams. Everyday we are exposed to callers, emails, and social media scams that people fall for, and sadly these scam artists are getting away with it.How much money do you think is lost every year from white collar crime? In the US about $400 billion dollars a year is lost by business and individuals from white collar crimes. (White 2016) The amount of crimes that fall under white collar crimes makes it hard to define it and hard to address all the different criminal acts. Many people think that a white collar crime is a victimless crime, but it can put a lot of financial hardship on anyone. All crimes have a victim, and yet to many people are getting away with unjust acts. The problem is how can we prevent white collar crime. In my opinion, we should educate people to help prevent some of the white collar crimes we have to try to dodge everyday. We should be taught at a young age about white collar crime and the different types of fraud, scams, and identity theft schemes that are used. A required class in high school should be put in place, so that we all are properly informed of these facts and wrongful acts. The government should also have a better eye on the millions of scams that happen everyday. The FBI is slowly making a dent, but most of these crimes are happening because businesses are giving out personal information without our permission. Laws should be put in place to protect everyone and if a company wants to give our names out they should have to ask for permission first. White collar crimes will always be around, but hopefully we can try to put a dent in fixing that.ReferencesCliff, G., & Wall-Parker, A. (2018, November 11).
